Installing the NN4ZZ Tiltplate
(Making Life WAY Easier!)

Having seen Al's invention on the web quite some time ago, I was enthralled with his ingenious device that allows you to work on your antenna system at ground level, rather than have to climb towers or ladders! As I've grown a bit older, I've discovered that I'm mortal, and suddenly Al's TiltPlate seemed like THE solution to remaining on this Earth a LOT longer, and certainly in way better physcial condition than suffering a face plant on the rocks beneath my tower.

I encouraged Al to sell them commercially after I had read about his initial design for his own tower, although he generously offered (and continues to offer) the plans to anyone who wished to build one themselves. He recently began selling them to hams, and I wanted to be among the first. Family responsibilities precluded my getting serial number 1 (congratulations Jerry, K3BZ!), but I recently ended up owning serial number 19. It arrived in excellent condition, bubble wrapped to the hilt to ensure safe arrival.

Yep - it's a bit expensive, but an ambulance ride to your favorite hospital will cost you as much or more! If you can afford it, it's the only way to go. The convenience offered by the TiltPlate is without equal. Al's innovative genious assuredly will prevent some serious accidents and injuries, and for that, he's to be congratulated!

OK - now on to the project. To install it, you have to crank down and lower the tower - for one last time! The following pictures illustrate just how NOT user friendly a tower can be without Al's TiltPlate.

Once my SteppIR antenna was removed from the tower and the tower was lowered to the ground, the next step was to install the TiltPlate. Al has excellent instructions and FAQs on his web site. I found the installation to be absolutely intuitive, and had no problems at all mounting the TiltPlate on the mast. The picture below is for illustrative purposes, with the mast rotated 90 degrees. For final installation, the TiltPlate obviously has to be "horizontal" to the ground for your beam to fit.

I did most of the installation myself, but having my delightful XYL Deb give me a hand made it MUCH easier....especially when it came to lifting the SteppIR up to be bolted to the TiltPlate. I did the heavy lifting and Deb helped with the U-bolt installation to keep the SteppIR from landing on my toes.
